When Bedtme Is Never Fun

If people aren’t fighting off painful parasites that invade their hands and feet (jiggers) there is another menace. At night you might be lucky enough to have a net to stop mosquitoes biting you and making you sick. But nothing like that can stop the invasion of bed bugs which creep up on sleeping children and adults and suck their blood. All very painful. Most people don’t have proper beds and often sleep on mud floors. But that doesn’t deter the bed bugs. We have decided that we are going to run some trials to see if we can begin to eradicate or control this terrible infestation which makes tough lives even harder, Next month we will begin a concerted spraying campaign in homes on Funzi island. If it proves successful we will consider taking it to Bodo. At the same time,on a smaller scale, we are distributing the cardboard packing cases which came with our new computers at the Bodo resource center. It may not seem a lot but the cardboard is a welcome addition to homes where people sleep on mud floors. It’s also great recycling. The computers also came with a lot of polystyrene. This has also created a windfall for local fishermen. We are breaking these into smaller pieces and making them into floats for a project we hope to support in the future. One where local women grow and harvest seaweed. This is later sold on for use in food and cosmetics. This may be the focus of our Christmas 2013 alternative gift campaign. So expect to hear more from us on that.
